Be Part of It

Come and join us as a volunteer at St James

Our volunteer stewards provide a warm welcome and friendly assistance to our audiences, to help them have a good experience at St James so that they will want to come back.

You get to see great events for free, with a complementary drink during the evening, at the same time as supporting St James, helping us to keep the doors open and welcoming the community in.

You will be asked to arrive 15 minutes before doors open to pick up your steward’s lanyard and receive information about the event from the duty manager, who’s also a volunteer.

Many of our events have the audience seated in rows in the hall or upstairs in the balcony

For these events when the doors open you’ll welcome people into the hall, help them find their seats, tell them where the bar is and sell programmes if these are on sale.

You may be asked for directions to the box office, bar or toilets and to answer questions about the evening or give other assistance.

You will be helping to keep everyone safe, ensuring that the fire exits remain clear, checking that drinks taken into the hall are in plastic glasses, reporting any spills and making the duty manager aware of any other problems arising.

During the performance you can relax in your allocated seat which will be near one of the fire exits, just being aware of anyone that may need assistance or needs directions, and ready to open the fire exit in the unlikely event that we need to evacuate.

At the end of the evening as the audience is leaving you will help to do a quick sweep of the hall to pick up forgotten property, discarded programmes and drink containers, then hand in your lanyard before you go home.

For our contemporary music events we ask for volunteers to help check people in at the door and issue wristbands, or to sit in the balcony (great view!) and keep an eye to ensure that everyone up there is happy and safe.

We organise a familiarisation visit for new and prospective volunteers a few times a year for them to have a tour of St James and find out more about the type of events that they will be helping at and what’s involved.

If you would like to volunteer for events at St James or would just like to find out more, please contact us at or telephone 711360

Volunteers get notified of the stewards required for future events and you can volunteer for as many or as few as you like to suit your preferences and availability.  We appreciate any time that our volunteers can give.
