SOUND at St James update

As we approach Sound Guernsey’s 10th Anniversary and St James 40th, we are very happy to complete the first stage of Sounds expansion since finding its full time home at St James. With help from John Ramplin Charitable Trust, Guernsey Building Supplies, Bright Electrical and Paul Le Lacheur, the Sound Community Studio is finished and ready for the islands young people to come a learn all about making and recording music. Situated in the basement of St James, the studio is fully equipped with state of the art equipment that will allow students to learn how to record and produce music, and develop skills that will transfer directly into possible employment opportunities.

Over the last decade Sound has hosted both gigs and festivals for under 18 year olds, whilst offering  extensive free mentoring in music and related industries. As it enters its 10th year it will be expanding its educational activities in its new permanent base at St James. With the studio now complete, the new year will see further work in the basement to launch a dedicated venue and education facility. This will allow Sound to open daily for the island young people to come and learn all about making music and the industries that are linked to it. With mentoring in music performance, song writing, production, promotion, event management, graphic and web design, and everything that St James does on a daily basis, all for free. The new venue will allow Sound to host weekly under 18 nights and the basement as a whole will become a place for those taking part to hang out and meet like minded people in a safe environment.

St James is very happy provide a home for Sound and to explore new ways to use the amazing resources we now have at the venue. We had been hosting Sound for several years when it became obvious we could respond to the demands for more capacity, develop the relationship and add new exciting events to St James calendar. Following the installation of our new heating and ventilation systems we found that we had a spare room perfect for the studio in the basement. With another room due to come free at the end of the year, we can now start the process of preparing to welcome daily visitors to the new Sound resource.
