Established as a concert and assembly hall 40 years ago St James enhances Guernsey’s community, bringing inspirational and entertaining performances to the island, supporting local musicians and groups, enabling community arts events and forming a significant contribution to the Guernsey Arts scene.
St James provides the space and opportunities for young people to develop their musical skills and offers community groups an affordable home, providing for the whole Guernsey community.
Codicils
A Codicil can be used in the case where a Will already exists and an individual wishes to amend it. Having written the Codicil, it should be signed and dated in the presence of two witnesses, who should then sign and date it themselves in your presence.

One way that those who value the arts in Guernsey have chosen to support St James is through a gift in their Will.
Supporters have found this is a pleasing and painless way to provide financial support, often as one of a number of good causes close to the individual’s heart.
A bequest can be made by adding specific wording directly to a new or amended Will, or an amendment can be made to an existing Will by the use of a Codicil.
You are encouraged to consult an Advocate if you are contemplating altering your Will so that your particular circumstances and desires can be appropriately documented.
We hope that you might consider this form of giving so that future generations can continue to enjoy the benefits of St James and all it has to offer.
Those supporters of St James who have chosen to leave a bequest to the charity will be invited to events specifically for our most valued supporters. All legators will be recognised on an appreciation board displayed in St James.
A legacy can take a number of different forms
- Residuary legacy – a proportion of what remains of your estate after all bequests, debts and fees are met
- Pecuniary legacy – a specific sum, which can be index linked
- A specific item such as a work of art or item of jewellery
- Reversionary legacy – granting lifetime use of the legacy to an individual, which then reverts to the Charity on that individual’s passing.
A residuary legacy enables you to give the whole or part of whatever remains of your estate after all bequests, debts and fees are met. Suggested wording for a gift to St James is:
“I GIVE the [whole of the rest] [a fixed proportion (x%} of the rest] of my estate to The St James Jubilee Foundation (Guernsey Charity Registration CH392) care of the Chairman of the Trustees of The St James Jubilee Foundation, College Street, St Peter Port, Guernsey GY1 2NZ for the general purpose of the said Charity and I DECLARE that the receipt of the Chairman of the Trustees or other duly authorised officer of the Charity shall be an absolute discharge to my Executors and Trustees without enquiring as to the application of the gift herein made.”
Pecuniary legacies are the most straightforward way of giving a bequest where you leave a specified sum of money to the named beneficiary. You can guard against inflation by instruction to your executors that the gift should be indexed linked. Suggested wording is:
“I GIVE absolutely the sum of [amount in words] [amount in figures] to The St James Jubilee Foundation (Guernsey Charity Registration CH392} care of the Chairman of the Trustees of The St James Jubilee Foundation, College Street, St Peter Port, Guernsey GY1 2NZ for the general purpose of the said Charity and I DECLARE that the receipt of the Chairman of the Trustee or other duly authorised officer of the Charity shall be an absolute discharge to my Executors and Trustees without enquiring as to the application of the gift herein made.”
“The legacy referred to in clause shall be index-linked, so that the actual amount given shall be the figure which bears the same proportion to the sum stated as the index figure in the Index of Retail Prices (the “Index”} for the quarter in which my death occurs bears to the index figure in the Index for the quarter in which this will is executed.”
You may prefer to bequeath something other than money such as a work of art, shareholding or item of jewellery. The wording you should use for this would be similar to that for a pecuniary bequest, but with a full description of the item or items.
This type of legacy allows for your estate, or particular assets, to be passed onto your spouse, children or other named individuals, for their lifetime. On their death the relevant portion of these assets revert to the beneficiary of the reversionary legacy. Since the detail of this type of legacy tends to be more complex than the forms above, it is best to consult your Advocate regarding the appropriate wording.
